The municipality of "Alcácer do Sal", which is among the most affected areas by the floods caused by the low-pressure system Leonardo, announced the postponement of the vote in the second round of the presidential elections scheduled for Sunday by one week.
The mayor, Cláris Campos, said in a statement to the local press on Thursday that the city of "Alcácer do Sal", located in southern Portugal, intends to postpone the vote in the second round of the presidential elections scheduled for Sunday by one week, in order to preserve the safety of voters and ensure the electoral process proceeds in safe conditions.
During a visit to the region on Thursday morning, the outgoing President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa indicated the possibility of postponing the elections by local authorities affected by bad weather, explaining that this decision rests solely with them, not with the government or any other national authority.
Portugal, which will hold the second round of the presidential elections next Sunday, recorded the second rainiest January since 2000, according to the National Meteorological Agency.
It is worth noting that the second round of the presidential elections features a contest between the moderate socialist candidate António José Seguro and the leader of the Portuguese far-right André Ventura, who secured first and second place respectively in the first round held on January 18th.
