The Berlin airport announced on Thursday the cancellation of all departing flights, for the time being, due to bad weather conditions, as the German capital region has seen new snowfall.
A spokesperson for the airport said: "There are currently no departing flights from Berlin airport due to the weather conditions," noting that the rapid freezing rain makes it impossible to de-ice the planes at the moment.
She explained that the restrictions are currently limited to departing flights, while planes already in the air are still able to land at Berlin airport, adding that it is not yet clear how long the takeoff suspension will last, with significant cancellations and delays expected.
The airport called on travelers, through its website, to check the status of their flights with the relevant airlines.
The German Meteorological Service had warned of high risks of slipping in Berlin due to freezing rain and ice.
